House Armed Services Committee Chairman Ron Dellums is in his twelfth term representing California's Ninth District. Born in Oakland, California in 1935, Dellums attended San Francisco State and received a master's degree in social welfare from the University of California. Mr. Dellums was a psychiatric social worker before entering politics. He served in the Marines from 1954 to 1956.

Along with its Senate partner, the House Armed Services Committee writes the bills each year that determine the maximum amounts the Defense Department can spend on weapons, manpower, and military facilities.
